Our guideWhat this means for your night

Our plain-language reading of the sources and calculations on this page. It adds no new facts; the quotes below are the evidence.

What a night here looks like. Emmet County keeps the Headlands' grounds, trails and viewing areas open 24 hours a day, all year, and visitors may stay out through the night for dark-sky viewing, though camping isn't allowed. That makes pre-dawn meteor showers practical here. Plan for the walk: the county says the parking lot fills early and the viewing area is a one-mile walk away, so arrive early and bring red lights.

Light rules. White lights, including phones, aren't permitted in the designated viewing area, and red-filtered flashlights are sold on-site, which is handy if you forget one. The ADA restrooms under the observatory tower are open around the clock.

Programs and stays. The county runs a weekly program, usually but not always on Wednesday evenings. Two rentals inside the park, the Guest House and the Stargazing House, let a group stay on site; the Stargazing House lists a peak-season rate, so check current pricing.

Getting there. The county lists the park at 15675 Headlands Road in Mackinaw City. Because the lot fills early on busy nights and the walk to the viewing area is about a mile, families with young children may want to arrive in daylight and walk out before dark.

Good to know. The county notes that the viewing area has no north-facing vantage point, so plan to watch toward the other directions. The county also says the Emmet County Board of Commissioners has committed to keeping the Headlands dark and protected, forever.

A bit of history. The county says the Headlands became one of the first 10 International Dark Sky Parks in the world, in 2011.
